Frequently Asked Questions

Get quick answers to the most commonly asked questions when attending to the final care of a loved one who recently died. Feel free to contact us with any additional questions you may have.
Where do I register the death of a loved one?
After receiving the medical certificate of cause of death it must be taken to the Registrar General Department (RGD) and a burial order will be issued. If an autopsy is required, the burial order will be issued on the day of the autopsy; and, not before. You may also apply for a death certificate at the time of receiving the burial order; with the exception of Forensic cases where an autopsy report is needed to accompany the burial order for registration. These specific autopsy reports are usually ready within 6 months.
If my loved one died overseas, do I need to register his/her death in Jamaica?
No, once the death occurs outside of Jamaica no local registration is necessary.
